Reflexology in Glenside, PA

Reflexology is a hands-on bodywork practice that uses targeted thumb-and-finger pressure on specific reflex points of the feet (and sometimes hands), based on a map that connects each point to a region of the body. At Tao Spa Glenside, we offer the traditional Chinese version — practiced the way it's been done for centuries — as focused 30 minutes work or the full 60 minutes session that opens with a warm herbal foot bath. Walk-ins are welcome daily, 9 AM to 9 PM.

More Than a Foot Rub

Reflexology works with the idea that the feet are a map of the whole body. Specific points on the soles, sides, and tops of your feet correspond to organs, glands, and systems, and a trained reflexologist applies focused pressure along that map. NCCIH on relaxation techniques describes structured hands-on and breath-led practices as broadly safe and commonly used to calm the nervous system and ease everyday tension — exactly the framing we use for a reflexology hour.

The practice has roots in NCCIH on Traditional Chinese Medicine (the broader tradition reflexology comes from) and has been used for thousands of years across Asia. People come in for it because it tends to leave them quieter, looser, and better rested — not because we promise it treats any disease.

How we work the foot

At Tao Spa, our reflexology therapists are licensed and trained in the Chinese tradition. They work systematically through both feet, paying attention to areas that feel congested, grainy, or tender — which often reveals things you didn't know were bothering you. Pressure is firm but never sharp, and the session adjusts to your comfort. For a plain-English overview of how skilled bodywork is generally structured and what reasonable expectations look like, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) position statement is a calm, clinically-grounded read.

"Reflexology won't cure anything. What it will do is leave you quieter, looser, and better rested — and sometimes that is enough."

Reflexology Sessions

Reflexology

30 min

A focused session covering the key reflex zones on both feet. No frills — just skilled hands working through the pressure points. Good as a standalone treatment or an add-on to a massage session.

Reflexology with Herbal Foot Bath

60 min

This is the full experience. You start with a warm herbal foot soak — a blend of Chinese herbs that softens the skin, warms the muscles, and draws out tension before the therapist even begins. Then 45+ minutes of thorough reflexology work on both feet. Most clients call this the most relaxing hour they've had in months.

Reflexology Special

50 min

Our signature session. Combines reflexology with targeted bodywork on the calves, shoulders, or neck — wherever you carry extra tension. It bridges the gap between a full massage and pure reflexology, and it's one of the most popular sessions we offer.

Couples Reflexology

60 min

Side-by-side reflexology in our private couples room. A quieter alternative to couples massage — you're both fully clothed, deeply relaxed, and can actually talk to each other (or not). Popular with couples who find massage too intense or who want to try something different.

Why People Choose Reflexology

They don't want to undress

Reflexology is done fully clothed — you only remove your shoes and socks. For people who find massage uncomfortable or who prefer not to disrobe, it's the perfect alternative.

They have foot and leg issues

Plantar fasciitis, chronic ankle swelling, restless legs, poor circulation — reflexology directly addresses the feet and lower legs while also supporting whole-body recovery.

They want full-body relaxation without full-body contact

The effect of a good reflexology session reaches well beyond the feet. Clients consistently report better sleep, reduced headaches, and less overall tension for days after.

They sit or stand all day

Teachers, nurses, retail workers, office staff — anyone who's on their feet or sitting for hours. Reflexology gives those overworked feet the dedicated attention they never get.

They're curious about Eastern wellness

If you've tried acupuncture or Chinese medicine, reflexology fits naturally into that approach. It's one of the oldest hands-on healing practices in Chinese tradition.

They want something for two

Couples reflexology is a low-key way to do something relaxing together — no oils, no robes, no awkwardness. Just two recliners, two therapists, and an hour of quiet.

About the Herbal Foot Bath

The 60-minute reflexology session begins with a warm herbal foot soak — it's not just hot water with some lavender drops. We use a traditional Chinese herb blend that includes ingredients like mugwort (ai ye), ginger root, and safflower, steeped to release their therapeutic properties.

The soak serves a practical purpose: it softens callused skin, warms the muscles and tendons in the feet, and opens up the reflex points. After 10–15 minutes in the bath, the foot tissue is much more responsive to the therapist's touch, which makes the reflexology work that follows more effective and more comfortable.

It's also just a nice way to transition into the session. You're sitting in a warm room, your feet are soaking, and your nervous system starts to downshift before anyone even touches a pressure point.

Common Herbs Used

Mugwort (Ai Ye) — warming, improves circulation, used in Chinese medicine for centuries

Ginger Root — anti-inflammatory, increases blood flow to extremities

Safflower — promotes circulation, relieves muscle and joint stiffness

Red Peony — soothes inflammation, calming effect

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reflexology exactly?

Reflexology is a hands-on therapy focused on the feet (and sometimes hands). The practitioner applies targeted pressure to specific points that correspond to organs, glands, and areas throughout the body. It's based on the principle that these reflex points are connected to your overall health through nerve pathways.

Is reflexology the same as a foot massage?

Not really. A foot massage is general rubbing and kneading for relaxation. Reflexology is more precise — the therapist works specific reflex points with thumb-and-finger pressure techniques, following a systematic map of the feet. The effect is different: reflexology aims to improve function throughout the body, not just relax your feet.

Does reflexology hurt?

Most of the session feels like firm, pleasant pressure. Some reflex points may feel tender — that's usually a sign of imbalance in the corresponding area. The tenderness is brief and typically eases as the therapist works through it. Most clients find the overall experience deeply relaxing.

What does the 60-minute reflexology session include?

The 60-minute session starts with a warm herbal foot bath to soften the skin and relax the muscles. Then the therapist works through the full reflex map of both feet, spending extra time on areas that feel congested or tender. The 30-minute session focuses on the key reflex zones without the foot bath.

How is Tao Spa's reflexology different from other places?

Our reflexology therapists trained in traditional Chinese reflexology techniques, which place greater emphasis on energy meridians and pressure point sequences than the Western approach. It's more structured and deliberate — not just a nice foot rub.

Can I combine reflexology with a massage?

Yes. The Reflexology Special (50 min) is one of our most popular sessions and combines reflexology with targeted bodywork. You can also book couples reflexology — both of you get treated side by side in our couples room.
