Four Hands Massage: What It Is and Why People Book It

A four hands massage puts two therapists at one table, each working a mirror image of what the other is doing, so the whole body is covered at once. It is the only line on our menu built around a single guest and a pair of therapists, and it is the one people describe to friends afterwards. Here is what it is, what it feels like, how it differs from a couples massage, and how the 60 minutes run at Tao Spa.

In one paragraph

Four hands massage is a single-guest session in which 2 therapists work on you at once, matching their strokes so both sides of your body get the same movement at the same moment. At Tao Spa it is a 60-minute booking under Couples & Four Hands on both the Glenside and Spring House menus, and because it needs two therapists free in one slot, book ahead.

I · The definition

What is a four hands massage?

A four hands massage is a massage given to one person by two therapists at the same time. They stand on opposite sides of the table and work in sync, so while one draws a long stroke down your left leg the other does exactly the same down your right. On both Tao Spa menus it is a 60-minute session called Four Hands Massage.

The name is literal: two therapists, four hands, and the whole point is that those four hands move as one pair rather than two. The strokes are the long, gliding kind most guests know from a Swedish-style session, the pressure is whatever you ask for at intake, and the pattern is full body, with both therapists moving to the next area together.

It sits in the Couples & Four Hands section of the menu, which confuses people, because it is not a couples session; the pair is two therapists and one guest, not two guests. Everything the NCCIH's overview of massage therapy says about massage in general applies here, since four hands is a way of delivering a massage rather than a different kind of bodywork. What changes is how much happens in each minute.

II · The feel

What does a four hands massage feel like?

It feels like more massage than your attention can keep up with, in the best way. For the first few minutes your brain tries to track both pairs of hands the way it tracks one; soon it gives up, and the two sets of strokes blur into a single sensation across the whole body. Most guests say the hour passes faster than any solo session they have had.

The reason is symmetry. In a one-therapist massage, half of you is always waiting: the right shoulder is worked while the left lies still, and the mind drifts to the idle side. With two therapists mirroring each other, nothing waits. The same stroke lands on both sides at once, which removes the small anticipations that keep a mind busy, which is why guests who cannot switch off in a normal session often find this one does it for them.

Pressure is not doubled; it is matched. One therapist leads and the other follows, so depth and pace stay even from one side of the body to the other, and the session often feels smoother than a solo one, because the rhythm never breaks. You are not being worked twice as hard. You are being worked everywhere at once.

The moment your mind stops counting hands is the moment the session starts working.

III · Why people book it

Four hand massage benefits: why book two therapists instead of one?

People book a four hands massage for two reasons: the intensity of the experience and the efficiency of it. Two therapists cover the whole body twice as thoroughly in the same 60 minutes, so no area gets a rushed two-minute pass. And the overload of matched sensation shuts down the running commentary in your head faster than one pair of hands can.

What the session can reasonably be expected to do is what massage in general does. The Mayo Clinic's overview of massage lists stress, muscle tension and general well-being among the areas where studies suggest massage may help, and having two therapists changes nothing about that evidence. Four hands is a more immersive route to the same place, not a stronger medicine, and we describe it as a relaxation experience for that reason.

The efficiency argument is the practical one. A solo hour has to ration itself: a long back, two legs, two arms, shoulders and neck in 60 minutes means something gets less than it deserves. With four hands the back and legs are worked together, then the arms and shoulders, and the hour ends with every part of the body having had a full session's worth of attention. If you want a thorough full-body massage and only have an hour, this is the booking.

IV · The comparison

Four hands massage vs couples massage: what is the difference?

A four hands massage is one guest with two therapists; a couples massage is two guests with one therapist each. They share a menu section and a room-for-two feel, but the experiences are opposite in shape. Four hands concentrates everything on you. A couples session splits the attention between two people who want to relax in the same room at the same time.

The couples side of the menu runs deeper than most people expect. Candle-Lit Couples Massage comes in 60 and 90 minutes, Couples Luxury Massage runs 75, Couples Healthy Combo Massage is a 60-minute clothed session with no oil, and Couples Reflexology is 60 minutes on the feet. The Glenside couples massage page and the Spring House couples massage page describe each one, and the Montgomery County couples page covers the drive from the towns around both storefronts.

All five lines are on both menus; Spring House lists the last one as Couples Reflexology Massage and publishes $190 for Couples Luxury Massage and $125 for Couples Healthy Combo Massage. Ask the desk for current Four Hands and Glenside pricing.

Which one makes the better gift?

It depends on who is opening it. A four hands massage is a gift for one person, the natural pick for a birthday or a thank-you where the point is to spoil someone; a couples session is the pick for an anniversary. Either way, our couples massage gift cards and spa gift cards never expire and work at both locations, so the recipient can book whichever they prefer.

V · The question people actually ask

Is a four hands massage worth it for a first-timer?

Yes, with one caveat. Four hands is a good first massage if what you want is to be thoroughly relaxed and you are not expecting a focused, problem-solving session. If you have never been on a massage table and feel nervous about it, a solo 60-minute Therapeutic Massage is an easier way to learn what you like before adding a second therapist.

The caveat is communication. With two therapists there is twice as much to say: the intake covers two sets of hands, you are asked how the pressure feels on both sides, and someone who does not yet know whether they like firm or light work can find the first ten minutes busy. Guests who have had a few massages already settle into it straight away.

It is also worth being clear about what the session is not. It is not the choice for one stubborn knot or a specific sore area; two therapists working a full-body pattern cannot stop and spend 15 minutes on one shoulder. For that, book Deep Tissue Massage in 30 or 90 minutes, and read our guide to deep tissue vs Swedish massage to decide how much pressure you actually want.

VI · The 60 minutes

How does a 60-minute four hands massage run?

The session runs in the same shape as any massage on our menu, with the difference that two therapists share every step. Arrive about 10 minutes early on a first visit for the intake, 5 if you have been before, and expect the hour to be built from full-body passes that both therapists make together, side by side.

The exact choreography varies with the pair, but a typical hour goes like this:

  1. Intake with both therapists. Tell them where you hold tension, how firm you like pressure, and anything to avoid or go gently on. One answer covers both pairs of hands.
  2. Settling in. You undress to your own comfort in private, lie face down under the drape, and stay covered except for the areas being worked, exactly as in a solo session.
  3. Back and legs together. One therapist takes the back and shoulders while the other works the legs, then both move to mirror strokes down each side. A pressure check comes early.
  4. Arms, hands and neck. You turn over; one therapist works the arms and hands while the other takes the neck and scalp, and both finish with matched gliding strokes.
  5. Finish. The therapists ease off together and leave you to dress at your own pace; the desk takes payment afterwards. Water and a slow evening make the most of it.

Should you talk during the session?

Only as much as you want to. The therapists need two things from you: whether the pressure is right, and whether anything is uncomfortable. Beyond that, silence is normal and most guests prefer it, because the point of the session is to let the mind stop. If one side feels firmer than the other, say so; the pair will match each other to your answer.

How do you ask two therapists for a different pressure?

Say it once, out loud, to the room. Both therapists hear it and adjust together, so you never end up with one firm side and one light side. A plain more or less is all they need, and the lead therapist will usually check in before you have to.

The NCCIH's six things to know about massage are mostly about conversation: with your doctor if you have a health condition, and with the therapist about their training and your needs. Pressure is that same conversation at table level; with four hands it simply goes to two people at once.

VII · Suitability and booking

Who should book a four hands massage, and how far ahead?

A four hands massage suits anyone healthy enough for a standard massage who wants an hour of full-body relaxation rather than targeted work. It is a favorite for birthdays, for guests who find a normal session too easy to think through, and for anyone with an hour who wants it used completely. Book it a few days ahead, because it ties up two therapists.

  • You want the most thorough full-body massage an hour can hold.
  • You find it hard to switch off during a normal session.
  • You are marking a birthday, a milestone or a well-earned treat.
  • You have had a few massages and know roughly what pressure you like.
  • If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, on blood thinners or managing a heart or circulation condition, check with your doctor first, as before any massage.

How far ahead should you book?

Walk-ins are welcome at both storefronts during open hours, and a solo massage is often possible on the spot, but a four hands massage needs two therapists free in the same slot, which is hard to find without notice and harder still on a weekend evening. Call (215) 824-8585 a few days ahead for either location.

Glenside, at 106 N Keswick Ave, is open Mon–Sun 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Spring House, at 752 N Bethlehem Pike, is open Mon–Sun 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Closed Tuesday). Cancellations need 2 hours' notice; two schedules are being held, so it matters more here. The walk-in page explains how same-day booking works for solo sessions, the FAQ covers payment and arrival times, and our tipping guide covers gratuity for two therapists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a four hands massage the same as a tandem or duo massage?

Yes. Tandem massage, duo massage and four hand massage are all names for one guest being worked on by two therapists at once. On both Tao Spa menus it is listed as Four Hands Massage, a 60-minute session in the Couples & Four Hands section, which is where people miss it when they look under the regular massage headings.

Can I get deep pressure in a four hands massage?

You can ask for firm pressure and both therapists will work to it, matched to each other. What the session cannot do is stop and spend a long stretch on one knot, because the pattern is full body and both therapists move together. For targeted deep work, Deep Tissue Massage in 30 or 90 minutes is the better booking.

Is the four hands session available at Spring House as well as Glenside?

Yes. The 60-minute Four Hands Massage is on the Spring House menu as well as the Glenside one. Spring House, at 752 N Bethlehem Pike, is open Mon–Sun 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Closed Tuesday), and because two therapists have to be free at the same time, call ahead rather than walking in, particularly for a weekend evening.

Can my partner and I both have four hands at the same time?

Only when the schedule allows, since that is four therapists in one slot. Call (215) 824-8585 well ahead and the desk will tell you plainly whether it can be done on your date. The simpler way for two people to share a room is Candle-Lit Couples Massage at 60 or 90 minutes, with one therapist each.

Is there a 90-minute version of four hands?

No. Four Hands Massage is a 60-minute session on both menus, and there is no longer version. If 90 minutes is what you want, the solo options are Deep Tissue Massage at 90 minutes on both menus and Tao Ashiatsu Massage at 90 minutes at Glenside; for two people, Candle-Lit Couples Massage also runs 90 minutes.

How much should you tip for a four hands massage?

Tipping is at your discretion, and tips go directly to the therapists. Most guests leave 18 to 20 percent of the session price; with two therapists, some leave that amount as a whole to be shared and others tip each therapist separately. Either is fine, so just say at the desk how you would like it to reach them.

Can I walk in for four hands, or do I need to book?

Walk-ins are welcome at both locations during open hours, and if two therapists happen to be free you will get the session on the spot. On a busy afternoon or a weekend evening that is unlikely, so call first, even an hour ahead, so the desk can line up the pair. Solo sessions are the easier walk-in.

How does draping work with two therapists?

Exactly as in a solo massage. You undress to your own comfort level in private, lie under the sheet, and only the area being worked is uncovered. With two therapists, two areas are usually uncovered at once, say the back and one leg, and everything else stays draped. Nobody is uncovered more than they would be in a one-therapist session.
