Massage Guide · Warm Basalt Stones
Hot Stone Massage Benefits: What the Heat Does and What to Expect
Hot stone massage benefits are easy to overstate and easy to feel. The short version: warmth makes muscle easier to work, so a therapist can go deep without leaning hard, and most people leave looser and sleepier than they expected. This guide covers what the stones are, what the heat does, how hot stone compares with deep tissue and with Himalayan salt stones, and how the 60-minute session runs at Tao Spa Glenside.
In one paragraph
Hot stone massage benefits come mostly from warmth: smooth basalt stones, heated and placed along the back, let muscle soften so the therapist reaches depth with less force. At Tao Spa Glenside the Hot Stone Massage runs 60 minutes, a 90-minute version adds a back scrub, and a 15-minute Himalayan Salt Stone add-on is on both menus. Open 9 AM to 9 PM daily.

I · The definition
What is a hot stone massage?
A hot stone massage is a full-body massage in which smooth basalt stones are warmed in a stone heater, placed on the body and used in the therapist's hands as tools. Larger stones rest along the spine while the therapist works elsewhere; smaller ones glide over oiled muscle, so heat and pressure arrive together. At Tao Spa Glenside it is a 60-minute session.
On the Glenside menu, at 106 N Keswick Ave, Hot Stone Massage is a 60-minute session in the Massage Bodywork section, and Hot Stone Massage + Back Scrub in Tao's Specials stretches it to 90 minutes with an exfoliating scrub on the back.
Massage of any style is reasonably well studied for relaxation and short-term easing of muscle tension; the NCCIH overview of massage therapy is the plainest summary of that evidence we know. Hot stone is a way of delivering massage, not a separate discipline. Most hot stone massage benefits trace back to one thing the stones change: how much force it takes to reach a tight muscle.
II · The mechanism
What does the heat actually do?
Heat makes muscle easier to work. A warm muscle is more pliable, so pressure that would make a cold, braced back tense up instead sinks in, and the therapist reaches depth with far less force. The second thing warmth does is simpler: it feels good, and a body that feels comfortable stops guarding, which is most of what relaxation is.
That is why a stone session can feel deeper than deep tissue while using less pressure, and it is the first of the hot stone massage benefits most people notice. Deep tissue earns depth with leverage and slow strokes into a muscle that is still resisting; with stones, warmth does the first part of the job before a hand pushes at all.
People often say heat improves circulation. Skin does flush where a warm stone has rested, but we would not build a booking around it. The Mayo Clinic's overview of massage lists relaxation and relief from stress and muscle tension among the benefits people report, and neither it nor the NCCIH research digest singles out heated stones as doing anything measurably different from hands. Count comfort as the surest of the hot stone massage benefits and circulation as a maybe.
Warm the muscle first and it stops arguing with the pressure; that one fact is why a stone session feels deeper while pushing less.
III · What to expect
What hot stone massage benefits can you reasonably expect?
The hot stone massage benefits you can count on are the ones massage in general delivers: looser muscles for a while, a drop in the feeling of stress, and an hour of real rest. The warmth adds comfort and lets the therapist work deeper with less effort, and many guests say the loose, drowsy feeling lasts into the evening. Anything beyond that is a hope, not a promise.
The evidence sits behind massage as a whole, not stones in particular: NCCIH's digest of the massage research reports that massage may help some people with pain in the short term and that many use it to manage stress.
Guests tend to book the stones for a few recognizable reasons:
- A back that feels tight everywhere and tenses up under firm hand pressure.
- Being cold: winter, office air conditioning, or simply liking to be warm while being worked on.
- Trouble switching off; the weight and warmth of the placed stones give a busy mind less to do.
Which hot stone massage benefits last beyond the session?
The loose, warm, slightly sleepy feeling usually lasts the rest of the day and often into the next morning. Evening guests often report sleeping well; there is no strong evidence either way on sleep, so count it as a common report rather than a proven effect. Looser muscles tend to hold for a few days, longer if you drink water and move gently; nothing about one session is permanent.
IV · Choosing
Hot stone massage vs deep tissue: which should you book?
Hot stone massage vs deep tissue comes down to how you want to reach depth. Deep tissue gets there with slow, focused pressure from thumbs, elbows and forearms into specific knots; hot stone gets there by warming the muscle first and working it with broad, heated strokes. Pick deep tissue for one or two stubborn spots and hot stone for a back that is tight all over.
The two are not opposites, and plenty of guests want both at once: firm pressure, delivered warm. Ask, and the stones become the firm tool; most hot stone massage benefits survive a firm setting intact. The Glenside deep tissue page covers the 30 and 90-minute bookings, and if the real question is firm versus gentle, our guide to deep tissue vs Swedish massage settles it.
| Compare | Hot Stone Massage | Deep Tissue Massage |
|---|---|---|
| Length on the menu | 60 min, or 90 min with a back scrub | 30 or 90 min |
| Main tool | Warmed basalt stones in the palm, plus hands | Thumbs, elbows and forearms |
| How depth is reached | Heat softens the muscle, then broad heated strokes | Slow, focused pressure into one spot |
| Next-day soreness | Uncommon | Common for a day or two |
| Pick it when | The whole back is tight, or comfort matters as much as depth | One or two knots need pinpoint work |
Both can be booked firm; say so at intake.
V · The variation
What is a Himalayan salt stone massage, and how is it different from basalt?
A Himalayan salt stone massage uses hand-carved blocks of pink rock salt, warmed, in place of basalt. At Tao Spa it is a 15-minute add-on on both the Glenside and Spring House menus: the therapist spends that quarter hour working with the warm salt stones, then the massage you booked continues as usual. The feel is the main difference; salt is lightly textured where basalt is glassy.
Basalt and salt do different jobs. Basalt is dense and dark, holds its warmth a long time and glides like glass, which suits an hour of long strokes. Salt stones are paler, carved rather than tumbled, tend not to hold warmth as long, and have a faint grain, so a stroke feels gently polished rather than purely smooth. Neither is better; they are different tools.
What are the Himalayan salt stone massage benefits?
Himalayan salt stone massage benefits belong to the same family as any warm-stone work: comfort, a muscle that softens under heat, and a stroke that feels different from a bare hand. The grain of the salt adds a mild polishing feel, and guests who like a change of sensation partway through a session book it for that. We make no claims about minerals or ions passing into the skin.
The 15 minutes go on top of the massage rather than being carved out of it, so a 60-minute booking becomes a 75-minute visit.
VI · The 60 minutes
How does the 60-minute hot stone session run at Tao Spa Glenside?
The 60-minute Hot Stone Massage at Glenside starts with a short intake, moves to placed stones on the back, then to stones used as tools in the therapist's hands, and finishes with hands alone. Arrive 10 minutes early on a first visit, 5 if you have been before, and plan to go home rather than back to work; there is oil involved.
A first hot stone session, in the order it happens:
- Intake. The therapist asks about heat sensitivity, numbness or reduced feeling, sunburned or broken skin, pregnancy, blood thinners, recent surgery and how firm you like pressure. Say if stones are new to you.
- Settling in. Undress as far as you are comfortable and lie face down under the sheet; one area is uncovered at a time. The stones have been warming since you called.
- The first stone. It goes on the back where you can feel it clearly, and the therapist asks straight away whether the warmth is right. Too warm and it comes off.
- Placed stones. Larger stones rest either side of the spine, sometimes one in each palm, while the therapist works the legs or shoulders by hand.
- Stones as tools. Smaller stones, held in the palm with oil, glide along the back, shoulders, arms and legs; pressure is checked out loud at each new area.
- Finish. The last minutes are hands alone, then you dress at your own pace and pay at the desk. Most guests leave 18 to 20 percent, and it goes directly to the therapist.
VII · Suitability
Who should ask a doctor before a hot stone massage?
Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, have reduced sensation anywhere, have a circulation condition, take blood thinners, have had surgery recently, or have sunburn, a rash or broken skin where the stones would go. Most of these end with a doctor's go-ahead and a gentler session, but heat removes a safety margin that a hands-only massage keeps, so we want that conversation before the first stone.
The Mayo Clinic lists the situations in which any massage deserves a doctor's go-ahead, and heat adds two of its own: you must be able to feel a stone and say it is too warm, and irritated skin should not have warm stones on it. If you are pregnant, the 60-minute Prenatal Massage is the booking we suggest instead; anyone who would rather skip the heat gets the same hour from a 60-minute Therapeutic Massage.
Can you have a hot stone massage with sunburn or freshly shaved skin?
Not on the sunburned area, and we would rather you waited until it has settled. Warm stones on skin that is already inflamed feel far hotter than they are, and the whole safety check depends on your skin reading temperature normally. Freshly shaved or waxed skin is more sensitive for a day; tell the therapist and they will adjust.
VIII · Practical
What should you wear, and how do you prepare for a hot stone massage?
Wear something easy to take off and put back on; how far you undress is up to you, and you leave with oil on your skin. Drink water beforehand, eat lightly rather than arriving full, and skip sunbathing the day before. Arrive 10 minutes early for a first visit so the intake is not rushed, and call ahead; the stones need a head start in the heater.
Most hot stone massage benefits depend on one habit, and the NCCIH's six things to know about massage say the same: tell the therapist what you need, before and during, which with stones means heat as well as pressure. Afterwards, water, a quiet evening and a warm shower rather than a hard workout; our guide to what to do after a massage covers the first 24 hours. The 100-minute Massage and Facial on the Glenside facials page is the stones and a facial in one visit.
House rules are short: 2 hours' notice to cancel, cash preferred because listed prices are cash rates, and gift cards that never expire and work at both locations. Tipping and arrival times are in our spa etiquette guide; the walk-in page explains same-day visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hot stone therapy the same thing as a hot stone massage?
In a spa, yes; hot stone therapy is another name for the same session. Some places use the phrase for a treatment where warm stones are only placed and left to rest. Our 60-minute Hot Stone Massage does both: larger stones rest along the spine while the therapist works, and smaller ones are held in the palm and used as tools with oil.
What kind of stones are used in a hot stone massage?
Basalt, almost always: a volcanic rock that is dense, smooth and dark, so it holds warmth for a long time and glides over oiled skin without catching. Himalayan salt stones are the alternative, carved from pink rock salt with a faint grain; at Tao Spa they are a 15-minute add-on on both menus, not the main session.
Does hot stone massage help with back pain?
It can make a tight, aching back feel better for a while. Among hot stone massage benefits, short-term relief is the one with evidence: the research NCCIH summarizes suggests massage may give some people short-term relief from low-back pain, and heat is one way of making that massage easier to receive. Pain that has lasted weeks, is sharp, or comes with numbness belongs with your doctor first.
How often should you get a hot stone massage?
For most guests a visit every 4 to 6 weeks feels about right, and some book closer together in winter, when a warm hour is worth more. The hot stone massage benefits people come back for are short-term, so spacing visits out gives you more for the money than stacking them days apart.
Can I combine a hot stone massage with a facial?
Yes. The Massage and Facial on both menus is a 100-minute booking: a 50-minute hot stone full body massage followed by a 50-minute hydration facial. Book ahead, since it holds a room for most of two hours, and arrive with a clean face so the facial can start straight away. It is also the only way to get basalt stone work at Spring House.
Can you add Himalayan salt stone to any massage?
Yes. Himalayan Salt Stone is a 15-minute add-on in the Specialty Massage section of both menus, so it attaches to almost any massage at either location. Mention it when you book so the time is held and the salt stones are warm when you arrive; a 60-minute booking with the add-on is a 75-minute visit.
Will hot stones leave marks on my skin?
No. Skin goes pink where a warm stone has rested and fades within minutes, the way it does after a warm bath. Stones do not leave the round marks cupping does, and a burn should never happen: every stone is checked in the therapist's palm first, and the first one placed on you is asked about straight away.
