Hot Stone Massage in Glenside, PA

Most people who book hot stone here have already had a deep tissue somewhere and found it didn’t hold. The heat is what changes that. A warm stone resting on a tight shoulder gets the muscle to let go on its own, before anyone has to push it. That is the whole idea, and it is why an hour of this can leave you looser than an hour of someone working hard on you. We run it as a 60-minute full-body session, or 90 minutes with a back scrub, at 106 N Keswick Ave in downtown Glenside.

What actually happens in the room

You get the room to yourself to undress to your comfort and get under the sheet, same as any massage here. The stones are already warming in a heater by then. Your therapist starts with hands, not stones — a few minutes of ordinary work down the back so they can find where you are actually tight instead of guessing.

Then the stones come in. Some get placed and left along either side of the spine to sit and soak in. Others stay in the therapist’s hand and get used like a tool, gliding through the oil along the length of a muscle. That second part is the bit people do not expect. It is not a stone sitting on you, it is a stone being worked with, and it covers ground faster than a thumb does.

Every stone is held in the therapist’s own hand first. If they cannot comfortably hold it, it does not go on you. Say something the moment one reads too warm and it comes straight off — nobody here will think you are being difficult, and skin varies a lot from person to person.

Toward the end the stones go away and it finishes with hands and hot towels. You get the room back to yourself to get dressed. Most people are slow getting off the table. That is normal. Drink some water before you drive.

Sixty minutes or ninety with the scrub

The 60-minute Hot Stone Massage is the standard booking and it covers the whole body at a sensible pace. Back, shoulders, arms, legs, and enough time on your neck to matter. If you are new to hot stone, book this one and see how your skin takes to the heat before committing to a longer session.

The 90-minute version adds a back scrub. The extra thirty minutes does not get spread evenly over everything — most of it lands on the back and shoulders, which is where nearly everyone who books it wants it. The scrub goes on before the stone work, so you finish clean and warm rather than the other way round.

One of our guests wrote about the 90-minute version in April: “This was the most skilled, intuitive, and caring massage I have had in years in this area. The pressure was perfect (thank you for asking to make sure!), and booking was seamless.” The asking is the part worth noticing. Nobody here should be guessing at your pressure.

There is a third way in that people miss because of what it is called. The 100-minute Massage and Facial in Tao’s Specials is a 50-minute hot stone full body massage followed by a 50-minute hydration facial. If you were going to book hot stone anyway and have ever thought about a facial, that is the one to look at. It is on the menu at both locations.

If your budget only stretches to one longer session a season, the 90 is the better use of it. If you want to come more often, the 60 is the one that fits into a real week.

This one is a Glenside booking

Hot Stone Massage and the 90-minute Hot Stone plus Back Scrub are on the Glenside menu. They are not on the Spring House menu, so if hot stone is the reason you are booking, come to Keswick Avenue rather than Bethlehem Pike.

Spring House does carry Himalayan Salt Stone as a 15-minute add-on. It is warm stone work and people like it, but it is a short piece bolted onto another service, not an hour of stones. Worth knowing before you drive to the wrong one.

Glenside is at 106 N Keswick Ave, two minutes on foot from the SEPTA station and a block from the Keswick Theatre, with free street parking. It is a short run for anyone coming from Jenkintown or Abington to the east, and about five minutes up from Wyncote or Cheltenham. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, so an evening session after work is a normal booking here rather than a favour.

When we would talk you out of it

The safety of a hot stone session rests on one thing: you can feel the heat and tell us about it. If anything has dulled sensation in the area — neuropathy, nerve damage, numbness you have not had looked at — this is not the service to book, and we will say so at the desk.

Please check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, have a circulation condition, are on blood thinners, or have skin that is broken or healing anywhere the stones would go. A deep tissue session or reflexology covers most of the same ground without the heat.

And the obvious one, which we would rather say plainly: Tao Spa is a relaxation spa, not a medical provider. Heat feels good on a sore back and there is real evidence that massage helps with everyday stress and muscle tension — the NCCIH overview of massage therapy is a fair summary of where that evidence stands. None of it is a substitute for seeing someone about a problem that is not going away.

Inside a hot stone session

Stones placed along the back to soak in, and stones worked through oil along the muscle. Both halves are part of the same hour.

Smooth heated stones laid in a row along a guest's back during a hot stone massage
Placed stones sit and soak while the therapist works elsewhere.
Massage therapist gliding a warm stone along a guest's shoulder muscle
The other half: a stone used as a tool, not an ornament.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot are the stones, actually?

Warm enough that you feel it land, not hot enough to make you flinch. The therapist holds each stone in their own hand before it touches you, and the first one always goes on your back where you can say something about it. If it reads as too hot, say so and it comes off. People are usually surprised by how much less pressure they need once the heat has done its part.

Should I book the 60 or the 90?

The 60-minute Hot Stone Massage is the whole body at a normal pace. The 90-minute version adds a back scrub, and the extra half hour mostly goes into the back and shoulders rather than spreading thinner over everything. If you sit at a desk all day and it is your upper back that hurts, book the 90. If you want a general reset, the 60 is plenty.

Can I still ask for deep pressure?

Yes, and a lot of people do. Hot stone is not a lighter service, it just gets to depth a different way — the muscle softens from the heat first, so the therapist can work further in without having to lean as hard. Tell them at the start that you want it firm. Several of our therapists do deep tissue all day and will happily bring that hand to a stone session.

Do you do hot stone at Spring House too?

Not as its own booking, no. Hot Stone Massage and the 90-minute Hot Stone plus Back Scrub are on the Glenside menu at 106 N Keswick Ave. Spring House does carry Himalayan Salt Stone as a 15-minute add-on, which is a warm-stone treatment but a different and much shorter one. If hot stone is the reason you are booking, come to Glenside.

Who should skip it?

Anyone who cannot reliably feel heat or report it — that is the important one, because the whole safety margin depends on you being able to say a stone is too warm. Please also check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, have neuropathy or reduced sensation anywhere, have a circulation condition, are on blood thinners, or have any open or healing skin in the area. We would rather book you a regular massage than talk you into this one.

Can I walk in for it, or do I need to book?

Walk-ins are fine and we are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day. Hot stone is the one service where calling ahead genuinely helps, though, because the stones sit in a heater and the heater needs a head start. Ten or fifteen minutes of warning is usually enough. Call or text (215) 824-8585 from the car.

Will I be oily afterwards?

Some. Stones need oil to glide, so there is more of it than in a dry technique like Thai. Most people go home rather than back to the office. If you are heading somewhere straight after, say so and the therapist will finish with hot towels and go easy on the hair line.

How do I book a massage at Tao Spa?

Book a massage at Tao Spa in 4 steps: pick Glenside or Spring House, choose a 30, 60, 90 or 120-minute session, reserve online or call (215) 824-8585, then arrive 10 minutes early. Walk-ins are welcome at both Pennsylvania locations whenever a therapist is free, and gift cards are valid at either address.

  1. Choose your location. Glenside is at 106 N Keswick Ave, Glenside, PA 19038, open Mon–Sun 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Spring House is at 752 N Bethlehem Pike, Spring House, PA 19477, open Mon–Sun 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Closed Tuesday).
  2. Pick a treatment and a session length. Massage, reflexology and facials run 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes; couples rooms are booked in 60, 75 or 90-minute blocks. Not sure what you need? Our full service menu lists every treatment with its length.
